MEMBERSHIP

Redeeming Hope exists as a family of faith that follows Jesus and helps others find Him by living all of life as missionaries of hope.  Organizing this family of faith involves a membership process that allows people the opportunity to commit themselves to one another as a local expression of God's global church, coming under the biblical protection, spiritual authority, and missional equipping by the elder team.

One can be graciously and actively involved in our church gatherings, groups, and serving without being a member.  We love all who are associated with our church family in whatever manner they choose to be involved.  However, in a world that shuns commitment and responsibility, we are willing to be counter-cultural in this regard by devoting ourselves in love to one another by choosing to come underneath the authority and accountability of loving, careful, and qualified leaders. We encourage all people who consider Redeeming Hope their church home to joyfully and voluntarily walk through this process of membership, receiving the ministry of the elders as they "care for the church of God".1

Expectations of Members + Defining "Member in Good Standing"

As part of membership at Redeeming Hope, we ask that you remain a member in good standing.  Essential to following Jesus and helping others find Him is pursuing a life of holiness inspired and motivated by the grace of Jesus.  We are not perfect people, but we are repentant people following a fully perfect Savior who is transforming us into His image and likeness.  Here are the expectations of members who are in "good standing": 4

  • Faith is hearing, believing, and obeying the Good News of God's grace.  This means consistently reorienting our hearts to the truth of God's heart for us as revealed in the Scriptures, living a lifestyle of repentance, committing to turning away from idols, and trusting in Jesus alone for salvation by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Jesus is continuing to become the center of our lives.

  • Participating in the family life of Redeeming Hope is a privilege and joy of membership involving time, talents, and treasure.  Our lives are marked with sacrificial participation in the community life of Redeeming Hope.

    • Time: Devoting time to attending our two environments where we accomplish our vision: Gatherings and Groups.  We ask that, as often as it is possible, members attend and participate in one of our weekly gatherings and in one of our weekly groups.5  We also highly encourage attendance at member meetings where we will share important information and pray together as a church.6

    • Talents: God has given each local church different members who have specific talents and abilities.7  We encourage members to find a place to serve that utilizes the natural and spiritual gifts that spark joy and excitement in your heart and serve in a rhythm that is not overwhelming, overburdensome, or overtaxing for you and your family.  We ask that you prayerfully consider serving opportunities and feel freedom to say "no" without judgment or critique.8

    • Treasure:  God has given us all things in our lives to steward for His glory, and in the Scriptures it is clear that part of that stewardship is to be towards the local church.9  We ask that members prayerfully practice an attitude of sacrifice (life interrupting) and generosity (lavishly) as the Lord leads them uniquely.10  Giving should be done not out of compulsion (guilt-I have to because the basket is coming) or reluctantly (fear-I am afraid I won’t be provided for if I don't give) but rather in faith as an act of worship (I believe all things I have are the Lord’s and so I am offering back to Him what is already His). “Where” and “What amount” you give is less important than how you give (the condition of your heart).  When your heart is positioned before the Lord in faith, we trust He will lead you towards lavish generosity.11

  • Essential to following Jesus is abiding with Him.12  This involves devoting time weekly to read God's word13, talk to Him in prayer14, and listen to Him through His indwelling Spirit15.  We encourage members to spend 15 minutes, 3 times weekly towards this time with Jesus, rejecting legalistic systems and embracing this time as a place to connect with a Father who loves us. While we encourage and provide methods of spiritual connection, in the end we have the freedom to practice disciplines in the unique ways God leads us. Our daily and weekly rhythms prioritize an intentional focus on cultivating an intimate life of abiding with Jesus.

  • Jesus always empowers and compels us to go into the world to invite others to find and follow Jesus.  Every member is a missionary and every environment is a mission field.  We encourage members to identify at least one person in their life who does not yet follow Jesus to (1) pray for them, (2) share your life and time with them, (3) invite them to a Gathering or Group of Redeeming Hope, and (4) seek to share the Gospel with them.  Our lives are marked with a care for those who do not yet follow Jesus and a boldness to invite them to follow Him.

MEMBERSHIP COVENANT

  • I have been led by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, and have been baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.17 I voluntarily and joyfully enter into a covenant with the elders and fellow members of Redeeming Hope as one body in Christ. I commit myself to the practices of the faith, as well as relationship and discipleship with fellow believers.18 I commit to authentically pursue a life free from sin by embracing the holiness of Jesus in humility, repentance, and accountability, being motivated by God the Father's grace and empowered by His indwelling Holy Spirit.19

  • I fulfill my responsibilities to the earthly family God has sovereignly placed me in, whether husband, wife, son, daughter, brother, sister, father or mother.20 By engaging in family devotions, educating my children in the Christian faith, and caring for the physical, emotional, and spiritual safety of my family, I model the Gospel and intentionally seek the salvation of my entire household.21 I commit to growing in wisdom to lead my family in grace, submitting to others in love.22

  • I fight to preserve peace and avoid sowing discord and disunity in the church.23 I commit to forgiveness and restoration as foundational to all of my relationships, not seeking retribution for wrongs committed against me but prioritizing reconciliation over judgment.24 I will put to death all gossip, backbiting, and excessive anger and seek to "outdo one another in showing honor".25 I will not make matters of conscience, personal preference, or personal conviction issues of righteousness for others.26 If a conflict arises with another member, I commit to pursuing reconciliation face to face in a spirit of gentleness and humility, avoiding disagreements over digital mediums, immediate legal action against other church members, and parading disputes to those outside of the church to the best of my ability.27 I commit to seek peace, using Matthew 18 as a pattern of resolution and voluntarily submitting to the elders and their authority to help in these matters.

  • I regularly attend and faithfully pray for our gatherings and groups and practice the sacraments of believer's baptism and communion.28 I move toward the practice of generosity in God’s kingdom through financially giving to the ministry operations of Redeeming Hope.29 I commit to identify my gifts, serve Redeeming Hope in a specific capacity, and remain aware of the present needs of our church. I seek to practice generosity of my time (through serving) and things (through financial contributions) as a responsible steward of God's varied grace, seeking to give cheerfully and not in a rhythm that is overwhelming, overburdensome, or overtaxing to my family.30 I commit to prayerfully discern what is appropriate, healthy, and generous.

  • I move towards those who do not know Jesus in a deep trust and faith that if the Gospel is powerful enough to change me, it is powerful enough to change anybody.31 I invite others to join me at gatherings, groups, and within my home as I open up my life to those who are far from Jesus. I walk in wisdom towards outsiders, seeking to pray for them, model the Gospel through friendship and generosity, and explicitly share the Gospel when appropriate and invited without exerting pressure or manipulation.32

16 The simple definition of the word “covenant” is that it is an agreement between two parties, but the nature of a covenant is entirely different than a “contract.” The attitude of a contract is, “This is what you’re going to do for me.” The biblical idea of covenant stands apart. The greatest model we have of covenantal love is God’s own love for His people. Covenantal love is, “Here is what I am going to be for you.” This is what we see demonstrated through Jesus to His Church. He didn’t wait for us to meet a condition before He loved us. He had made his decision: He would love us to the cross and rescue us. This is the kind of love we see in Scripture and throughout church history in God’s people for one another. Acts 2:42 tells us the early Christians “devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” They covenanted together and loved one another as Christ loved them. This is the spirit and context of this member covenant.
